The Book
With over 30 years of combined experience of raising children with disabilities or special needs, Carrie M. Holt (that’s me), Amy J. Brown, and Sara Clime came together to write this book for you.
When we met, we realized that our stories were vastly different (adoptive mom, prenatal diagnosis, terminal diagnosis), but we experienced common emotions. Suffering speaks a common language, so we learned to connect based on similar emotions instead of situations.
In our book, “The Other Side of Special,” we share vulnerably, from the heart, about these messy emotions, our journeys, and how we’ve worked with them. We do not offer quick fixes or simple solutions to this complex journey we call special needs parenting. Instead, we provide understanding, compassion, and solidarity, knowing God is present even amid complicated and messy emotions.
Together, there is joy, hope, and community.

Amy J. Brown
Amy J. Brown is a writer, mentor and co-host of Takeheart podcast. Co-author of the book The Other Side of Special: Navigating the Messy, Emotional, Joy-Filled Life of a Special Needs Mom. Amy has her Masters Degree in Spiritual Formation in Leadership. Amy and her husband have six children and live in Michigan.

Carrie M. Holt
Carrie M. Holt is a wife, mother of three sons and one daughter. She is an author, podcast host, speaker, and Ohio resident with deep Michigan roots. She is also a co-host to the podcast, Take Heart Special Moms. In addition to co-authoring The Other Side of Special: Navigating the Messy, Emotional, Joy-Filled Life of a Special Needs Mom.

Sara Clime
Sara Clime is co-author of: The Other Side of Special, a podcaster, speaker, entrepreneur, and business owner. She lives in the Midwest with her husband and two amazing sons. She co-founded the first disability ministry in her community, is leader to her church Discovery program, and on the Missouri Christian Conference’s planning committee. She has her Master’s in Ministry Leadership from Central Christian College of the Bible.
